Chizarira National Park

Chizarira National Park is one of Zimbabwe's largest and undoubtedly most isolated wilderness areas, perched high on the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment. Overlooking the vast Zambezi Valley floor and Lake Kariba, this rugged paradise is defined by dramatic geological formations, sheer cliff faces, and deep, isolated river gorges. It stands as a pinnacle destination for extreme overlanders seeking complete isolation and purest self-sufficient expedition travel within the KAZA TFCA network.

Key Wildlife

Wildlife tracking in Chizarira requires patience and sharp bush skills, as the mountainous terrain offers vast, dense hiding spaces.

  • The Valley Predators: High densities of mountain-adapted Leopards and Lions tracking through the canyon networks.
  • Big Game Outposts: Home to formidable elephant bulls ('dagga boys') and large herds of Cape buffalo congregating around the natural perennial springs.
  • Avian & Raptor Paradise: A world-renowned birding hotspot protecting rare cliff-nesting raptors like the Taita Falcon, Black Eagle, and Peregrine Falcon.

Access & Technical Driving

Chizarira features some of the most demanding and technically challenging tracks in Southern Africa. It is strictly 4x4 territory.

  • Manzituba HQ Gate: The main administrative hub. Visitors must clear entry checks and secure maps from the Zimparks rangers here.
  • Escarpment Tracks: Roads are notorious for sharp volcanic rocks, steep inclines, and deep washed-out ruts (dongas) that demand low-range gearing.
  • Isolation Factors: There is absolutely no network signal, mechanical assistance, fuel station, or grocery supply anywhere within a 100km radius.

Infrastructure & Camps

There are no commercial luxury lodges inside the park boundaries. Accommodation is purely focused on elite, single-group wilderness camping.

  • Cliff-Edge Stays: Legendary spots like Mucheni View Campsite offer breathtaking, unfenced pitches directly on the lip of a 500-meter drop.
  • Spring Hideouts: Shaded clearings like Kaswiswi Bush Camp provide basic thatch shelters near highly active wildlife water points.
  • Walking Safaris: Because driving can be highly restricted by the terrain, Chizarira is the ultimate destination for multi-day armed ranger-guided foot tracking.

Pro Tip

Chizarira is not a destination for single vehicles or novice drivers. Sharp escarpment rocks inflict heavy sidewall damage on tires—carrying two functional spare tires, a high-lift jack, and a comprehensive tire repair kit is mandatory. Water is scarce and must be treated or packed in entirely. When navigating towards the park from the west or exiting east through Gokwe, ensure your fuel calculations account for heavy, high-consumption low-range mountain driving.
