Khaudum
Namibia's Wildest Forgotten Wilderness: Deep Kalahari sand, massive elephant herds, and pure raw adventure.
Khaudum National Park
Khaudum National Park is legendary among overlanders as one of the most remote and challenging conservation territories in the entire KAZA TFCA. Located in northeastern Namibia on the unfenced border with Botswana, it protects pristine Kalahari sandveld, dense teak woodlands, and key seasonal riverbeds (omurambas). It is a critical unfenced migration sanctuary where thousands of elephants roam freely across international borders in their purest wild state.
Key Wildlife
Operating completely without artificial game fences, the park follows natural ancient migratory patterns of the Kalahari basin.
- The Elephant Stronghold: Home to massive, fierce breeding herds migrating along the ancient sand routes toward Botswana.
- Rare Predators: One of Namibia's most stable refuges for the highly endangered African Wild Dog, along with high densities of Lions, Leopards, and Spotted Hyenas.
- Specialized Antelopes: Excellent tracking grounds for Roan (Pferdeantilope), Sable (Rappenantilope), and Tsessebe thriving in the thick bush savannah.
Access & Wilderness Controls
Khaudum is not for beginners. There is an official regulation requiring a minimum of two fully equipped 4x4 vehicles per convoy to enter the park.
- Sikereti South Gate: The southern entry checkpoint via Tsumkwe, introducing drivers directly to the southern teak woodlands.
- Khaudum North Gate: The northern control center managing tracks heading up towards the Trans-Caprivi Highway (B8).
- Khaudum Green Gate: A critical western monitoring point along the main veterinary barrier line fence.
Infrastructure Network
The park's accommodation framework balances community-focused eco-luxury with rugged, wild self-sufficient expedition clearings.
- Xaudum Lodge: A premium, community joint-venture luxury lodge built on wooden platforms overlooking the northern valleys.
- Sikereti Tented Camp: A newly modernized hub in the south providing comfortable furnished safari glamping tents and updated facilities.
- North & South Campsites: Rugged, unfenced wilderness camping sites equipped with individual private ablution units under large shade trees.
Pro Tip
Khaudum demands absolute self-reliance. Pisten are exclusively deep, relentless Kalahari sand that puts extreme strain on engines and tires. You must lower your tire pressure significantly before entering. There are no shops, fuel stops, or cell signals inside the park bounds. Carry a minimum of 40L of water per person, dual spare tires, satellite communications, and enough fuel to tackle heavy, high-consumption sand driving for days.
