Nxai Pan National Park

Directly adjoining the Makgadikgadi complex to the north, Nxai Pan National Park encompasses a collection of ancient, fossilized salt lake beds topped with sweet-tasting, short grasses. Unlike the vast open crusts of Sua or Ntwetwe, Nxai Pan features islands of acacia tree canopies and terminalia groves. It is a highly dynamic wilderness that requires careful seasonal navigation and dedicated 4x4 vehicles to survive its notorious entry tracks.

Key Ecological Highlights

Nxai Pan is highly famous for its seasonal transitions, acting as a critical nursery area for herbivores.

  • The Rainy Season Boom: From December to March, nutrients locked in the pan soil trigger a massive flush of sweet grasses. This attracts thousands of zebras to give birth to their foals here.
  • The Desert Bulls: During the dry months, the area belongs to giant, nomadic elephant bulls that travel great distances to dominate the solar-pumped deep boreholes.
  • Cheetah and Predator Country: The flat, open grass pan presents an ideal hunting ground for cheetahs, wild dogs, and large lion prides that utilize the low scrub for cover.

Access & Tactical Navigation

Reaching the main pan complex demands vehicle endurance and correct tire pressure management.

  • The Main Entrance Gate: Located right off the A3 highway, this is where DWNP park fees are handled and track checks are conducted.
  • The Corrugation Track: The 36km track leading north from the gate to South Camp is infamous for its combination of deep Kalahari sand and vicious, vehicle-shaking corrugations.
  • Baines' Baobabs Loop: Dropping off to the east, a secondary sandy track leads to the legendary baobab outcrop overlooking Kudiamo Pan.

Infrastructure & Accommodations

The park accommodates both self-sufficient overland campers and high-end photographic safari travelers.

  • South Camp Campsite: The main public camping base managed by Xomae Group, featuring solar-heated ablution blocks heavily shielded against elephant damage.
  • Nxai Pan Camp: The premier, permanent luxury lodge option within the park borders operated by Kwando Safaris, overlooking a highly active permanent waterhole.
  • The Main Waterhole Loop: A strategic loop track built near the center of the pan plain, offering exceptional stationary game viewing directly from your 4x4.

Pro Tip

The 36km transit road from the A3 highway to South Camp is heavily corrugated and filled with deep sand ruts. Do not attempt this drive in a standard 2WD or soft-roader vehicle. Deflate your tires to at least 1.4-1.6 bar at the entrance gate to soften the ride and prevent your transmission from overheating in the heavy sand. Carry ample drinking water, as the water from the boreholes inside the park has a high mineral concentration and a salty taste, making it unpleasant to consume without heavy filtration.
